Turtleback Creek “A Thirty Day Journey of Discovery”

A Daily Devotional for Men
by Dwayne Neeley

Turtleback creek is a real place, but even more so is what it means to me. It’s more than just a small stream in the woods; it’s a state of mind, a place of peace and fellowship with God, no matter where you are. It’s that place where you can go to be alone with God and hear from Him. If you take this journey you’ll find that God speaks in clear tones and quiet whispers. Discover for yourself that He does speak if only you will listen. The following is just a few of the things I’ve gotten from God while down at the creek. On each day you’ll find insights, discoveries and a simple prayer. I trust it’s a blessing you will want to share.

Day 1 - Turtleback Creek
For me, turtleback creek is a small stream about 80 yards behind my house. It's the place I go to be alone with God. On one trip down to the creek I found a turtle shell. So, I call it “Turtleback Creek”. "Catchy, huh." Where is your turtleback creek? The place where you go to get alone with God, the place where you pray and meditate on the things of God, and most importantly where you hear from God. It could be your bedroom, driving in your car, your work shop or even your own back yard, anywhere there are no distractions. In Native American culture the turtle was symbolic of prayer and meditation. As the turtle closes itself in its shell so must we look within and commune with our creator, allowing our spirit to speak and receive from God’s Holy Spirit.
The Bible tell us in Philippians 4
4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Discover today how life changing a regularly scheduled appointment with God can be, just the two of you at your turtleback creek.

“Father, I come into your presence on this day unlike other times and I ask for your Spirit to touch and speak to me. I have needs; I know that you know what they are. But, today I want to feel your presence with me and to know that you are near. Help me to make a habit out of spending time with you. Others in my life have needs and I will lift them up to you in time, but I know I can’t help others if I myself am weak. So, for now, strengthen my heart.”

Day 2 - Meditation
Meditation is not some new age mystical mumbo jumbo. Nor is it sitting cross legged on the floor completely void of any thoughts. It can be, however, slowing everything down and focusing our thoughts on the things of God. And after you’ve pondered and thought, prayed and praised take time to listen. God, through the Holy Spirit, His Holy Word, or through the sound advice of a good friend, can speak to your heart. Like with any attempt to hear from God, you must go into it with the expectation of hearing and receiving. Jesus often said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 11:15, 13:9, 13:43

“God never ceases to speak to us, but the noise of the world without and the tumult of our passions within bewilder us and prevent us from listening to him.” -Francois Fenelon

So, the next time you’re stressed out, worried, or just weary, meditate. Discover God’s voice fresh and new in the wilderness of your own heart.

“Father, today is a new day. Get glory in all that I do and say. Today I ask for nothing and I hope for nothing but to hear from you. With what little time I seem to have, let this time be filled with the sound of your voice in my ear. “Speak to me Lord”, as Samuel once said, “for here am I, your servant.”

Day 3 - Walking Stick

One day while praying down at the creek, I heard something walking up the hollow. My first thoughts were," It must be a pack of wild dogs" (Cause that happens so often - ha-ha) well, you know how our minds wonder. So, I looked around and saw a large stick lying near the water. It was about 5 feet long and 2 inch around. Perfect, now I have protection, let-come-what-may. Well, it turns out it was only deer. No duh! By this time I needed to be heading back up to the house. I thought, “This stick would make a good walking stick.” I used it as such all the way home. As I went to lay it down something in my spirit spoke and said, "Lord, make me a Walking Stick, the kind of man others feel safe having around in times of fear and let me be someone that others can lean on until they make it home."
“ I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.”1 John 2:14

Today want you discover what God can do for others through you if only you will allow him to.

“Father, bless all those who come to mind right now, those sick or struggling with the issues of life. In some way use me as you see fit to bring comfort and healing to the hurting. Help me to truly be a blessing to someone today.”

Day 4 - It’s not that Difficult

Those of us who have grown up in the church have a tendency to over complicate things, I don’t know why. I guess we somehow feel, “the bigger, the better.” “There’s got to be more to it than that!” I don’t know, but in some churches it’s ridiculous. It’s really not that hard, and I’m not making light of sacred things, but take a look at this.

Jesus was asked, “Of all the commands, which is the greatest?” “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Matthew 22:37-39

• First, love God with all your heart- your emotions.
• Second, love God with all you soul- your spirit, inner being.
• Third, love God with all your mind- your intellect.
• Four, love your neighbor- those you come in contact with.

I think if we as men would put more focus on these four things we would become the husbands, fathers, neighbors, brothers and men of God that we all know we can be.

“Father, help me today to show my love for you with all my emotions, to show you just how I really feel about you with all of my spirit. To love you completely, not just for what you do, but for who you are. And help me truly love, not just in word, those you bring across my path today.”

Day 5 – Someone please hit the EZ button

When asked, “How much sacrifice will be enough for God to accept us?” The answer came, “He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8

• First, do justly- treat people fairly
• Second, love mercy- have compassion
• Third, walk humbly- have a humble spirit
Then there’s what the bible says about pure religion. “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27
• First, visit the fatherless and the widows- in other words, care for those in need and do the work of ministry.
• Second, keep yourself unspotted from the world- remain pure, resist temptation, walk a higher path.

Spend a few minutes thinking about how you can be a better man by doing these simple things on a daily basis. Discover how uncomplicated serving God and others really can be.

“Father, help me today not to try and figure things out on my own, but to trust wholly in your word and your way. Not to use my own intellect or powers of persuasion, but to follow your game plan for my life. Thank you that I don’t have to find my own way because I know Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.”

Day 6 - “It’s All About the Word”

Have you ever heard the expression, “Familiarity Breeds Contempt”? It’s often used in the military to explain why a superior officer shouldn’t fraternize with a subordinate. We see it in the work place as well. Have you ever heard someone say, “It’s Okay if I’m a little late. I’m friends with the boss.” That familiarity breeds contempt that comes out in our actions. Well, I’m afraid that type of thing has happen in the church with regard to the Word of God. How often do you hear the man of God say, “Turn with me in your Bibles to Psalms 23.” And somewhere in the back of your mind you think, “Oh, here we go again.”? It’s contempt, plain and simple. Now, ask yourself this, when was the last time you heard, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” and something inside of you swelled with a sense of pride, knowing that you belonged to Him? Or read “He makes me to lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside the still waters ...” and you felt a calm come over you as you began to understand God’s leadership role in your life? Or had an over whelming sense of hope when you heard, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life?

How long has it been? How long will it be before we all start cherishing God’s word once more? Today can be a day of discovery, just open the pages of life - God’s Holy Word.

“Father, help me today to fall in love once again with your precious word. Let it be to me as sweat as honey. As I spend more time reading the Bible let it come in to my heart as a love letter to my soul. Let each word and phrase resonate in my spirit that I may know the love of Christ and share that love with others.”

Day 7 - Great Treasure

Psalms
119:11 “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin
against you.”
119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction, For your word has
given me life.”
119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
119:133 “Direct my steps by your word, and let no iniquity have
dominion over me.”
119:147,148 “I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry
for help; I hope in your word. My eyes are awake through the night
watches that I may meditate on your word.”
119:162 “I rejoice at your word, as one who finds great treasure.”

Does this describe how you feel about the Bible? Is it a comfort,
a lamp, your meditation?
Is it to you as if you’ve found a great treasure? Or maybe it’s
that it “used to be”, but not anymore.

Want you consider getting reacquainted with the Bible and read it again for the first time? Really discover God in a whole new light and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you into all truth.

“Father, your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Direct my steps by your word, and let no iniquity have
dominion over me that I may be the man of God that I long to be”

Day 8 - Burning Hearts

Looking at Luke 24: 13-35 we see, before a man named Saul ever had His Damascus Road experience, two little known disciples had an experience with the risen Lord on the road to Emmaus. It was this Emmaus Road experience with Jesus that led them to say “Did not our heart burn within us, while
he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” Perhaps you have had a Damascus Road experience and came to know Jesus as your Savior. But have you since had an Emmaus Road experience that has set your heart ablaze because of time spent with Him (Jesus) and God’s Holy Word (Bible)? In order for Jesus to be Lord of your life you must be a servant. To know the will and ways of our master we must be intimately acquainted with Him. We do this through His word. We Christians are the least of all the religious groups when it comes to knowing the teachings of our leader. We can quote Psalms and Proverbs; we are very familiar with the writings of Paul. We have our favorite life verse, but few Christians really know and understand the teachings of Christ. We are told that if you lack wisdom you need only ask God. It’s imperative that we read, study and understand the teachings of the “Word who became flesh and dwelt among us”.

“All the knowledge you want is comprised in one book, the Bible.” –
John Wesley

Rediscover today what it means to be on fire for God and it truly comes from time spend with Jesus in prayer and listening to Him speak through the pages of the Bible.

“Father, too often I don’t understand the parables and true meanings behind all that Christ sought to teach and instruct us concerning the kingdom of heaven. Help my ignorance and give me wisdom and understanding with insights and discernment.”

Day 9 - Truth

Truth is revealed, truth is the only thing that truly exist. Everything else is made up, fabricated. Jesus prayed “sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.” Proverbs 30:5 tells us, “Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.”

It was once said “Man has only three problems, Sin, Sorrow, and Death. And the bible is the only book that has the answer to all three.”

Here are a few things the Bible does.
• Provides direction
• Teaches truth
• Builds faith
• Changes lives
• Improves character
• Clams fears
• Comforts hurts
• Instills hope
• Prepares one for eternity

I have lived long enough to realize that I desperately need truth in my life. By now, I’ve gotten just enough intelligence to be dangerous. I need His yes and no, His light to expose my darkness, His precepts to steel my convictions. His Word provides all that. Discover it for yourself today.

“Father, as Jesus prayed for my sanctification to come through your word, I now pray for help and determination to stay in the Word. To make it my meditation day and night that I may truly be set apart unto you.”

Day 10 - Men’s Ministry

Men face things every day that are unique to men. There are differences between married and single, younger and older, but for the most part we all share the same temptations and trials, joys and triumphs. We are concerned about things that matter most to men; jobs, family, sex, relationships, ministry and so much more. But, one of the main things we have in common is that very few men ask for spiritual or emotinal help. And too few men would know how to help if called on. In Joshua chapter one God tells all the men to cross over and help their brothers fight for the things God had promised. And in chapter four we read “About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle” In a nutshell, Men’s Ministry is men helping men, then preparing them to help others.

“Down in their hearts, wise men know this truth: the only way to help your self is to help others.” – Elbert Hubbard

Discover what really matters to you and your friends. There has to be more than just sports 24/7 or your favorite TV shows? Talk to your best friends and then listen, you’d be surprised what’s really going on in their lives.

“Father, you know my heart and how hard it is for me to open up and share with anyone, much less the guys. Help me to find that one person I can talk to and confide in. Then help me be a good listener, a good friend indeed.”

Day 11 - Prepared for War

I rather enjoy telling the story of the Middle School Championship football game in 2008. My son Seth and his team mates at Haralson County won that year, (that’s my favorite part). The opposing team was down at the half 13-6, the head coach told his boys something that I was surprised to hear. I overheard him tell his team, “They have what we have allowed them to have, because we are not executing, we are not fighting, and we don’t want it bad enough!”
Like it or not, there is a war going on. The casualties are those dying and going to Hell every single day; lost and alone without Christ. Oh, we have our excuses, “it’s that preacher” or “it’s those hypocrites down at that other church.” But the truth is “They (the enemies of God) have what we have allowed them to have, because we are not executing, we are not fighting, and we don’t want it bad enough.” What about prayer in school, displaying of the Ten Commandments, Gay Rights, abortion on demand? It’s simple, “They have what we have allowed them to have, because we are not executing, we are not fighting, and we don’t want it bad enough.” God have mercy on us. We have a lot to answer for.

Discover what’s really worth fighting for. These verses will help. “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:11, 12

“Father, sometimes I feel powerless and useless, with all that’s going on in the world today. I’m not afraid of a fight and I’m certainly not a coward, but it can at times seem to be overwhelming. Help me take it one day at a time and give me my marching orders for today as I let tomorrow stay in your hands.”

Day 12 - When to Prepare

Before disaster strikes. I’m reminded of the TV commercial, “Now is not the time to wonder if you have enough Auto Insurance.” (After a terrible crash)
There’s no time to prepare for war when you get that phone call in the middle of the night. Or when the doctor tells you it’s you with cancer. Or when someone comes up to you and says “I’m thinking about suicide”, or when someone ask “What must I do to be saved?”
Jeremiah tells of a dreadful day to come and ask a serious question “If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?” Jeremiah 12:5

Allow me to give you the (Neeley Interpretive Version) AKA – My own words.
“If little things cause you to lose heart and fall all to pieces, how will you handle big problems?” “If you can’t praise Him in the good times, with a good job, in a season of health and well being, then what makes you think you’ll praise Him in bad times? Or when someone has a gun to your head?”

Will you be caught off guard and unprepared? Discover for yourself the storehouse of weapons we as Christians have at our disposal. Where? You ask, in the pages of God’s Holy Word. Start with 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 and Ephesians 6:10-18

“Father, help me to understand that to be prepared is to trust in you with my whole heart and to lean not on my own understanding. To have your power sometimes comes from having your peace that passes all understanding, the kind of peace that guards my heart and mind through Christ Jesus.”

Day 13 - How to Prepare

1) Do something to enrich your Christian life
• Get serious about bible study
• Start memorizing scripture
“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.” Hebrews 2:1
• Make a list of your blessings
• Read a Christian book
• Put away all bitterness
2) Do something for you church
• Pray for the pastor
• Volunteer
• Offer to pick someone up
• Visit and make phone calls
• Increase your giving
3) Do something for world evangelism
• We have been empowered to witness
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8
• Be ready to give an answer (biblical answer)
“Jesus answered and said unto them, “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” Matthew 22:29

Discover for yourself how you really, really know you can do a thing? You do it and do it and do it, and then you do it again. Then you realize, “Yes, I can do this. I can memorize scripture, I can help at my church, and I can win souls for Christ.”

“Father, I do want to do my part. I know I have no part in the salvation of my soul except to believe. But, I want to grow, to know and to go. Help me make growing and maturing as a Christian a part of my daily life.”

Day 14 - Pick Your Fights

1) The fight of faith
“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.” 1Timothy 6:12

• We’re never told to fight for our own way
• We’re never told to put people in their place
• We’re never told to go home and have preacher for lunch or back bite the neighbors
• We’re never told to fight against flesh and blood
The only fight are allowed to engage in is the fight of faith.

2) Don’t fight against change.
“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;………………….. ECCLESIASTES 3:1-8

Change is inevitable as is confrontation. As much as I hate confrontation, I hate even more when wrong wins out over right because good men do nothing. Discover today through prayer and meditation on God’s word which fights are worth fighting.

“Father, give me courage with discernment, boldness with compassion and fearlessness with wisdom.”

Day 15 - My Daily Prayer

“Father, Creator, Most Holy God, I stand
in your presence alone, naked and broken.
Touch with a portion of your greatness,
my heart, my mind, my spirit and my body.
I stand humbled and grateful for your attention.
Forgive my sins and shortcomings.
Remember always that I am put dust.
Your word is truth; My thoughts, feelings and emotions are all lies. I ask for nothing but mercy and hope for nothing but to be blessed.
You alone know what I have need of.
Let your spirit arise within me, communing with my spirit that I might discern the great mysteries of life.
Strengthen my heart that I might have courage.
Strengthen my mind that I might know truth.
Strengthen my spirit that I might fight spiritual battles.
Strengthen my body that I might accomplish what I must.
Let wisdom awaken me in the morning and
peace lay me down to sleep.
Let my meditations be on your word and let my countenance reflect Christ in whose name I pray. Amen”

The thing about a daily prayer is that it’s daily. Do you have one of your own? The main thing is to just pray every day. Discover what great changes can take place in your life with God at your side. Oh, He’s always been there, but daily communication with Him helps you know He really cares.

“Father, I may be a man of few words (or a man who tends to ramble on) but with your help I want to have a real relationship with you. Real intimacy that only you can provide.”

Day 16 - Kingdom Living

In Matthew 3:11 John the Baptist said of Jesus ........"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: "
What is kingdom living? And how can we know if we are living the kingdom life? These are good questions. The Bible is full of answers to these and many other of life’s pressing questions. I can’t over emphasize the importance of God’s word. With everything that kingdom living is to some, it is impossible apart from God’s Holy Word. The only way to be changed from the inside out is to be immersed in the Bible. Jesus prayed to the Father “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17
Kingdom living without sanctification is like someone just playing church. Pretending to be something that they are not. Sanctification comes through the word of God. Therefore kingdom living comes through the word. (Period) Look at what James had to say. James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Before we can pray “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven” we must be willing to let Him rule in our lives. Discover kingdom living by devoting yourself to serving the King of kings and be doers of the work. Then you too will be blessed in whatever you do.

“Father, you can’t take first place in my life because you choose not to force yourself on me. But right now I want to give you first place in my life to do with me as you see fit. I know that I must decrease for you to increase, your will be done in me as it is in heaven.”

Day 17 - What has it come to?
The head football coach at UGA was to appear in a new movie. The movie received a PG rating for “excessive religious content” As you look around you must admit that it’s time to call Christian men and women to action. But, I’m afraid that the main problem with the church today is apathy. A university professor noticed a student about to fall asleep in class, so he ask the boy, “What is the greatest problem in our society – ignorance or apathy?” The boy replied, “I don’t know and I don’t care.” Is your neighbor born again? Are your children saved? When people look that you do they see Jesus? Is your church a place where the hurting can find help? Too often, if only in our minds, we cry “I don’t know and I don’t care.”
Webster defines Apathy as: “Lack of emotion; Lack of interest; Unconcern; Indifference”
Paul and Silas came limping into town. And the Jews panicked and said in Acts 17 “These that have turned the world up-side-down have come unto us also.” Wouldn't it be awesome if the people of your community would say of you, “Oh, Becky, It’s those Christians, the ones that have turned our town upside down for Jesus.” It can happen, but we must get busy.

So, what is the greatest problem you have – ignorance or apathy? Discover the cure by discovering the need.

“Father, forgive me for the times I get self absorbed. Thinking only of me and mine. Show me with the eyes of my spirit what Jesus sees when He looks at a person in need. Use me to be a blessing to others.”

Day 18 - SPEAKUP

Here are some helpful tips to follow when witnessing for Christ.

Share your testimony. Who can argue with that? Pay attention to the other person. Not what you’ll say next. Educate yourself with God’s Word. Memorize select verses. Ask the right questions. Those pertaining to eternal life. Keep on the subject. Jesus Use scripture, not your personal beliefs and opinions. Pray that God will use you to win the Lost. He will.
This is just enough of the Romans Road Plan of Salvation to jog your memory. Make yourself a little cheat sheet similar to this one below or use a gospel tract.
Romans 3:10 “As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one." Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 5:12 “......sin entered into the world, ...and death by sin for all have sinned.” Romans 6:23 “...the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 5:8 “..God demonstrates His love toward us,...while yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans10:13 “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

“He that goes forth weeping bearing precious seed shall doubtless come again with rejoicing….” Psalms 126:6 Discover the true joy of soul winning by trusting the saving power of the Gospel to win your family and friends.

“Father, let me, with compassion, tell someone today of the love of Christ. And assure them that Jesus loves them and He has the power to change their lives.”

Day 19 - “Daily” Things in Life
• Daily Renewing of the Inner Man
2CORINTHIANS 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward [man] is renewed day by day.
• Daily Reading of the Word
PSALMS 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
• Daily Prayer to the Lord
Psalms 86:3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
• Daily Praising of the Lord
Psalms 72:15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; [and] daily shall he be praised.

Discover that being a Christian is not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. Do a little bit everyday and see the difference in your life, others will.

“Father, I know me, and I know it’s hard for me to stick with certain things. But please help me today to at least get started doing those things I know I should be doing. I’ll worry about keeping it up another day.”

Day 20 - Basic Truths of the Gospel

We Christians are guilty of making God’s basic truths so complicated. Let me say, “It’s so simple”. Now, I’m not talking about “Christianity for DumDums” or some watered down easy believe-ism. Some of the great preachers of all time have been able to confound the wise and yet reach the simplest of sinners with the Good News. Let’s begin with Salvation. In Acts 16:30-31 we read “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The Answer: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” So, my question is, What’s the hard part? Or, what part did you not understand? Yes, but what about baptism or church membership or tithing or any number of religious things? Jesus said all of that religious stuff was like a filthy rag. And what of Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” There is a big difference between religion and relationship. A relationship with Christ as your savior means you understand what he did for you when he died on the cross for your sins, and you believe and repent. Relationship means you communicate on a regular basis (prayer, bible reading and taking time to lesson). Religion, on the other hand, says, you’re like us, we accept you. You’re different, you must be wrong. Religion says to the young women as she walks out of an abortion clinic, “You… baby killer, there’s no forgiveness for you.” Or to the young man sitting alone dying with AIDS, “You’re getting what you deserve.” Relationship on the other hand says, “There’s room at the cross for anyone willing to repent and turn to Jesus.”

If you ever discover the “whosoever will” mentioned in Romans you will have a greater appreciation for the relationship you have with Jesus. And you will have a greater sense of forgiveness toward others.

“Father, thank you that one day the Holy Spirit, through your grace, gave me the opportunity to say yes to Jesus. A day I will never forget. Help me live for Him.”

Day 21 - It all adds up

“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance;(self control) and to temperance(self control) patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.(Love)” 2Peter 1:5-7
It all starts with faith. Faith is the baseline, ground zero. Of all the “Armor of God” as told in Ephesians 6 and all it represents such as truth, righteousness, gospel message, faith, salvation and the word of God, Paul writes that faith is to be taken above all. Above all? Above truth, one doesn’t recognize truth apart from faith; it’s by faith that we believe things to be truth. Above righteousness, what is righteousness? Is it not demonstrated before us in scripture? It is found within the stories of the lives of God’s people alongside the gospel of peace. The gospel of peace or the gospel message is taken as fact by faith. Above salvation? “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” Ephesians 2:8 Above the sword of the Lord, the Bible? It’s referred to as “the word of faith” in Romans 10:8. We accept God’s word and all its truths by Faith. So, yes “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” Ephesians 6:16

As you discover Faith in your life, also get ……Virtue-”moral excellence, goodness” Knowledge-”correct insight” Temperance-”self-control” Patience-”bearing up under trials” Godliness-”Godly character out of devotion” Brotherly kindness-”love toward your brothers” (fellow human beings.) Love-”active goodwill toward others”

“Father, as I grow and mature in the faith, through the Holy Spirit bringing me into all truth using the Word of God, help me serve you and minister to other.”

Day 22 - Power Principles for Christian Service

 The foundation of ministry is character.
 The nature of ministry is service.
 The motive for ministry is love.
 The measure of ministry is sacrifice.
 The purpose of ministry is God’s glory.
 The power of ministry is the Holy Spirit.
 The model for ministry is Jesus Christ.
“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” 1Peter 1:13 It could read, “You need to get your minds ready for action and be self-disciplined, and set your hopes only on the grace to be brought to you at Jesus Christ’s appearing .”

Self-Disciplines
• Start with small things.
• Get yourself organized.
• Don’t seek to always be entertained.
• Be on time.
• Keep your word.
• Do the most difficult tasks first.
• Finish what you start.
• Accept correction.
• Practice self-denial.
• Pray – Pray without ceasing.
• Meditation – Meditate on God’s word.
• Acts of Worship - Worship the Lord in all you do.

“Father, sometimes it seem like a lot to undertake. But, I know I need to discipline myself. I also know that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. For that I give you thanks.”

Day 23 - Brotherly kindness

If any passage in all of God’s word describes brotherly kindness and all that it entails, to me it would be Romans chapter twelve. Please allow me to present a few verses for your enlightenment and reading pleasure.
“1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;”

I think it’s possible to discover real joy in your work, career or ministry. Actually, work can be ministry if we truly love people and want to honor and prefer them over ourselves. Does the working world really have to be dog-eat-dog?

“Father, help me today to love, then show that love to others. The kind of love that is accepting and forgiving. The exact kind of love that Jesus shows me every day.”

Day 24 – Jesus’ six major attributes (As found in the Gospel of John)

1) Creator of All - John 1:1-14 I have no problem with people wanting to worship the Creator as long as we all recognize that he has a name and his name is Jesus.
2) Sacrifice for Sin - John 1:23-29 Jesus is the Lamb of God. It is His sacrifice on the cross that makes it possible for you and I to come before God justified, free from the penalty of sin. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
3) Son of God - John 1:30-34 From the mouth of one who is arguably the greatest prophet to have ever lived. Jesus said of John the Baptist “among those born of women there has not risen one greater.” Matthew 11:11
4) Discerner of the Heart - John 2:22-25 Jesus really does know what is in the heart of man. And we know from scripture that He cares and knows what it feels like when we have to go through some things.” Hebrews 4:13
5) Savior of the World - John 3:9-21 “...that the world through Him might be saved.”
6) The Christ - John 4:4-26 “The woman said, I know the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). Jesus spoke to her and revealed, “I who speak to you am He.”

A journey of discovery is incomplete without discovering all there is to know about Jesus. Not only in the Gospels do we learn of Christ, but beginning in the beginning Jesus was there. The story of Christ is woven throughout the pages of God’s Word from Genesis to Revelation and continues today in the hearts and lives of believers who serve a risen Lord.

“Father, remind me in my spirit, when I am tired and weary, that Jesus is my all in all. That I serve the Kings of kings and Lord of lords and what’s more He wants to be my friend. For that I am so thankful.”

Day 25 - Ephesians 1-3

Purpose
Eph. 1: 9 “Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; [even] in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:”
Peace
Eph. 2:14”For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition [between us]; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, [even] the law of commandments [contained] in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, [so] making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.”
Love
Eph. 3:17 “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”

Though out the book of Ephesians Paul speaks of the unity of the church in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. He explains God’s eternal purpose and grace and the goals God has for the church.

“Father, as I read and study the Bible create in me a hunger and a thirst for more. Thrill me with each turn of a page. It’s through your word that I want to grow to become ……..…….”

Day 26 - Ephesians 4-6

Unity
Ephesians 4:1”I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all the lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
Children of Light
Ephesians 5:8“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.”
Armor of God
Eph. 6:10 “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].” 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”

Christ in the church and the church in Christ is the theme of Ephesians. Ephesians is also a manual of Christian living. It pulls together much of the material of the other letters of New Testament, but in a more concise form. It’s full of practical advice for spiritual growth.

“Father, as Paul wrote the things He did for my “instruction in righteousness” let your words speak to my heart that positive changes can come in my life and the lives of those around me.”

Day 27 - The Six Things
“That every young man needs to know”

1. Have purpose – know what it is you want to accomplish each day. Some days it may be a big project, something you want to (have to) get done at work, school or around the house and other days it may be rest and healing for your mind and body. It may be that you need to spend extra time with someone special in your life, whatever the reason do everything on purpose. To just go through life and whatever happens, happens is no way to really live. The next thing you know you’re older and asking yourself “What have I really done with my life?”

2. Have faith – settle in your own heart that God is real and that Jesus Christ is Lord. Read what amazing lives other people of faith have lived, read the bible, pray, but always do those spiritual acts that feel right for you in your own heart. Try to imitate someone and do things because you are “supposed to” and you will not stick with it. Make being a man of faith a personal and life long journey.
The Bible tells us, “.....work out your own salvation......”Philippians 2:12
“Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?” 2 Corinthians 13:5

3. Know that you are a spiritual being – there is a part of you, the real you, that is right now living forever, your spirit. So, why not be familiar with Him and feed Him? Thoughts are to your spirit as food is to your body. If you are what you eat shouldn’t you be concerned about what you feed your spirit? I’m not just talking about sin and degradation but sounds and images of things that are unhealthy and that weigh heavy on your spirit. This could include those things that are negative, causing unnecessary guilt, shame and remorse. The Bible tells us, “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed (daily) by the renewing of your mind (spirit).” Romans 12:2 (italics added) The final authority on any subject is the Word of God. (Period)

As you ponder these first three, know this, being a man of faith is a life long journey, not a sprint. Take some time and work on you.

“Father, show me the things in my own life that I need to pay more attention to. As things come to me help me retain them that I may share with a friend or a young man who may need it most.”

Day 28 – The Six Things (continued)

4. Be comfortable with your own body – I’m all for modesty and covering one’s body as is fitting in our society. I also know that there are times in which we use clothing as a cover up to hide our true selves. We mask ourselves, thinking that we are hidden and we do the same with God. I know some people are just uncomfortable being nude and that’s OK. But know this “There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.” Hebrews 4:13
You can’t hide, God sees you every moment of every day as you were the day you were born, naked. Wear your designer clothes and look as good as you would like to but at the end of the day when you strip down to nothing “there you are.”

5. Be comfortable with the sound of your own thoughts – I’ve heard people say that they need something on in the background, TV, radio or something. Otherwise it’s too quiet. Well, what’s wrong with quite? Sometimes we need quite; we need to hear the sound of our own thoughts. The beating of our own hearts, the sounds of our own breathe. Our minds, like so much of the rest of our lives, can experience overload. Some call it quite time, alone time or me time, but we all must have it from time to time. Get to know our own mind, your own thoughts.

6. Discipline yourself, at some age no one else will, so take control of your own desires, your appetites and cravings. Just because you want it or can afford it doesn’t mean you need it or should have it. Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection,...”
Don’t be one of those guys who say, “I just couldn’t help myself.” That simply means you are weak and who wants to live like that?

Sometimes a journey of discovery requires a good like in the mirror. We may not always like what we see and if you don’t, then make changes. Ask God to help you with that.

“Father, some changes are easier said than done. Help me do the things I can and trust in you for the things I cannot.”

Day 29 – “Jesus loves me” ♪

We have just about all sung at some point in our lives the little chorus “Jesus loves me this I know, for the bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me for the bible tells me so.” But, I’m afraid some have missed the awesome truths of this song. Some might sing, “Jesus loves me this I know because I’m Baptist.” Some may dare to sing “Jesus loves me this I know because I’m rich” While others may sing “Jesus loves me this I know because I’m an American.” Regardless of how you feel or what you may think Jesus does love you. It’s a kind of love that you can’t buy or earn. And it really has nothing to do with you at all. We know that Jesus loves us, and though we may not know why, we know it for a fact because the bible tells us so.
In the book of Ephesians in chapter three Paul writes…………
“14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;19 And to know the love of Christ, which passes knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God.”

If you are not a Christian let me share with you that Jesus loves you so much that He gave Himself as a sacrifice for your sins when He died on the cross. It’s that kind of love that calls to us in our darkest hour. If you are a Christian then let me remind you that Jesus loves you so much that He gave himself for you.

“Father, thank you for sending your only son to take my place on the cross. As I walk in the light of that cross let me reflect the love of Christ to those still living in darkness.”

Day 30 - Word of Power

I don’t think the Devil cares if you pray. For without knowledge and discretion, spoken of in Proverbs 1:4, your prays are, for the most part, foolish, selfish and powerless. I don’t think the Devil cares if you tithe or give to the mission fund. Too often we give money as a pale substitute for getting involved and being “doers of the Word.” And I don’t think the Devil cares if you go to church. If all you do is show up, smile, say a few Amen’s and shake the preachers’ hand. Then go your way untouched, unmoved and unchanged by the power of God’s Holy Word.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

As you come to the end of this thirty day journey I hope and pray you have discovered much. Please let it be only the beginning of a life long journey that can continue each day with God’s help, Jesus at your side and the Holy Spirit ministering God’s Word in your heart day by day.

“Father, Let wisdom awaken me in the morning and peace lay me down to sleep. Let my meditations be on your word and let my countenance reflect Christ in whose name I pray. Amen”
